my engine broke down in my 2002 gt and im buying a crate motor. i have to swap over the intake manifold and headers but the headers are all rusted so i wanna get some headers probably just shorties while i have it out to give it a better exhaust tone. im wondering how often could there be an exhaust leak? im going to be spending enough money on getting it fixed and dont want to keep fixing it. Also would it be worth the shorty headers or not? give me some ideas thanks

Don't bother with shorties. Either stay with the OE cast manifolds (a little surface rust is harmless) -- you could always media-blast them and have them ceramic coated... -- with new gaskets or go LT. You won't see any performance increase with shorties because they don't flow much better than the OE cast part and they lack the scavenging benefits offered by the tuning of long-tubes.

Before deciding on LTs make sure you understand the implications they have for emissions testing. LTs sometimes struggle with this because the thin metal loses heat so fast and the factory H-pipe (and its cats) are not usable with them. They can also make certain types of servicing tricky (e.g. transmission removal for clutch access). But they do offer the best power gains.

If the choice is between shorties or cast, I'd save the cash and stay cast.

yeah im getting the locking header bolts not going to use what comes with them. should i stay away from the cheaper brands like pacesetter any flowtech lt's??? will get some minor bolt ons here and there just figures while i have to motor out id put some headers on it and h pipe.
