Picked up a MasterPro CP4038 new aluminum water pump from Oreilly Auto. Installed it, put the belt on, everything seemed fine.

Turns out a couple of days later my belt was getting all frayed and squealing, I was losing a V. The belt was riding on the back lip of the pulley. Went back to Oreilly and compared the two different types of water pumps that are equivalent to my original water pump casting of E9TE-8505-A4A. The only one that was listed the same size (input shaft length wise) with my Mustang was a short re-manufactured water pump.

I wanted to keep the new water pump I already installed.

Solution: Went to the nearest salvage yard and grabbed a dome shaped waterpump pulley from a small block F150, perfect fit and it was about a 1/2 inch deeper to allow for the taller waterpump.

Lesson: Always record the casting numbers of your old water pump before picking up another one, if you only want to do the job once.
