Ford to reveal 2011 Mustang powertrain updates at L.A. Auto Show — Autoblog

I know there are all the rumours floating around, but I figured this might interest some of us on here.

Most of us already knew, but thanks for posting.

I don't think any of us will be surprised...this is what I expect:

GT - 5.0L 400HP with a 6spd manual finally offered. Probably will pick up some weight but still won't be a cow like the Camaro.

V6 - 3.7L 280HP....not sure what transmissions will be offered.

GT500 - 5.0 Supercharged, better tires and suspension for improved launching.

I'd be more surprised if they didn't have these offerings.

The GT and V6 offerings will put the Mustang into Camaro territory for HP and being that it's a lighter vehicle with a live axle as long as the tires can hook up I'd go ahead and bet that in the next comparison of the muscle cars it won't even be a competition anymore seeing as how Mustang already won overall value this year with an engine that's about 15 years old and a log axle out back that does it's job better than the fancy IRS in the Camaro. Not to mention the interior of the Camaro....further proof why GM can't get its act together.

I don't think the GT will go straight to 400. Need something for the future and special models. I say they hold back around the 350 area, still 35 more horse than the previous.

I pray you are right. I have been waiting about 6 years for the coyote to come out. If yall remember i believe its first code name was the "hurricane".

I say this is what the line up will look like.

Boss 302 = 5.0L 400hp and 6 speed maunal
GT = 4.6L 350hp 6 speed manual and 6 speed auto
V6 = 3.7L 260-280hp 6 speed manual and 6 speed auto
GT-500= 5.4L at 600hp

I really want the 400hp/400tq but Ford is kind of slow to increase HP on Mustangs unless it's a special version. Just think a 1990 GT had 225hp/300tq and 20 years later it's only been raised 90hp. Now they are going to make a 85hp to 100hp jump in a year.


I really want to believe but it's kind of hard. However this is a new Ford we're talking about so it does seem more likely now.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the ecoboost 3.5l. It makes 365hp in the SHO and is easily cabable of more. Being a turbo engine, it will make more power VERY easily with aftermarket options.

I beleive ford will offer this engine in the mustang around the same time as the new 5.0. The fuel economy ratings will be tightening up soon and this V6 makes awsome power with small v6 gas mileage. While a snarling 400hp v8 would be awsome, I would probably opt for this v6.

I hope they don't go with IRS. The log out back right now performs better then Dodges or Chevys IRS setup.

Take 800lbs out of the chevy and dodge muscle cars, to equal the weight of the mustang and see what happens. Those cars are way obese and of course that hurts handling. I agree that the solid axle has been refined and works well in the mustang, but it is still prone to bind and not the best option for handling.

Sounds like the ecoboost mustang will beawsome when it comes out! I'll be done with my degree by then, so maybe I can afford one.

I wouldn't mind seeing IRS as an option...but not in all of them. I honestly am quite content with my log out back.

Nah, the hurricane was the code name for the 6.2L V8 non-modular that ford nixed a few years ago and may be working on again. It was being designed for heavyduty truck platforms.

Instead they developed the 6.8L V10 which they make in 2v and 3v form. Its used in the e and f series superduty and was an option for the excursion i believe.

Far as I know, the curb weight of the mustang is around 3400. I looked up the dodge challanger SRT-8 and it is 4140. One could round up to an 800lb difference..., but maybe the real difference is closer to 700lbs. My mistake.

He may have been talking about the rumor that the Mustang will be putting on a few pounds. The 5.0L engine alone is 150lbs heavier than the 4.6L.

Nah, you're right, the V6 is about that. It's pretty easy to get a GT with leather up to about 3600.

While I don't doubt a small weight increase for the overall car, how in the world can the 4.6 gain 150lbs when going to a 5.0? Going to a 4V head and cast aluminum intake can't add that much can it?
