Ok, I still have unresolved drivability issues with my stang.

I have had a fuel smell ever since Ive bought this car. It reaks of gasoline. The car started shutting down while driving it. I thought I may have had spark issues so I replaced wires, plugs, cap/rotor, coil and tfi. That offered a mild and only temporary improvement. I couldnt start the car for a few days - until I tapped the stock fuel regulator with a hammer handle.

I set my TPS sensor to .976 volts.

I replaced the regulator and now its back to no more than 3k rpms under load. I dont need anymore because I tend to drive rather relaxed - I WANT IT BACK!

I bought a gauge that taps into the fuel line through the shrader valve. When I removed the shrader there was ****ing red permetex on the threads! WHAT KIND OF STUPID HICK WOULD DO THAT? So, I put the gauge in and set the fuel pressure to 39 psi with the vacuum tube plugged but off the FPR. I checked timing at 10 btdc.

All of these things to no avail.

What in the world should I do? What would cause such a strong gasoline smell without leaving a piss trail of gas?

Up next Im going to replace the injectors with an excellent set I have in hopes that the injectors have broken or rotted O rings.

Next it will be the fuel pump.

Dump the codes and see what the computer says is wrong…

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

See http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/

See http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html for more descriptive help

IF your car is an 88 stang, you'll have to use the test lamp or voltmeter method. There is no functional check engine light on the 88's except possibly the Cali Mass Air cars.

Ive got nothing. Perhaps Im stupid. I put the jumper on the small pigtail and #2 and put the test light (that I just bought) on #4 and the positive battery terminal. All I got was a long flash and a short flash. I tried KOEO and KOER to no avail, Im completely out out money and worried about rent.

Is there anything else I can do?

Im also reading E6E... off of alot of engine parts. Isnt that the number for 1986 parts? If I have E6 heads - an 86 motor Im taking the 302, emissions and fuel inj out and putting in a carbed 351 like people have been suggesting

Is the smell coming out of your pipes when the car is running or coming out from under the hood? Try to track where the smell is really coming from, the injector 0-rings are a good idea to change, my freind had puddles in his lower intake maniflod and wondered why his car stunk of gas. EGR maybe? Just an idea.

Injectors are coming out tommorrow, its difficult to say exactly where its coming from. Its extremely noticeable all around the car. My buddy says its easily smelled out of the tails. I can smell it under the hood as well. We shall see

Fuel injector seal kits with 2 O rings and a pintle cap (Borg-Warner P/N 274081) are available at Pep Boys auto parts. Cost is about $2.74 per kit. The pintle caps fit either injectors with a pin sticking out the injector end or 4 with more tiny holes in the injector end. The following are listed at the Borg-Warner site ( http://www.borg-warner.com ) as being resellers of Borg-Warner parts:

http://www.partsplus.com/ or http://www.autovalue.com/ or http://www.pepboys.com/ or http://www.federatedautoparts.com/

Most of the links above have store locators for find a store in your area.

Well, I replaced the injectors today. I every injector was badly gummed up,7 injectors looked good other than being dirty - one (#4) had a broken pintle cap and #4 clinder on the lower intake was looking like alot of fuel was going down.

Car starts, runs and responds alot better. BUT I still hit the wall at 3.5 k rpms!

The fuel pump is most likely the culprit. Tomorror I'm swapping in LTs and or H pipe just for SAG maybe I have plugged cats from dumping buttloads of fuel?

i had a feul regulater go bad an it pissed out the vaccume line into the intake i found this out because i pulled the vaccume line off and primed it i seen it shoot in the air just check its probly somthing stupid i hate stuff like that i feel your pain

ah yes the pain, Ive got a new afpr and I know where my lines are. Im at 39#psi and 10btdc. This is a nightmare. It will come to an end. After my exhaust, fuel pump and changing out my seized up stock fan with my mark8,3g.march pulleys. I'll be noticin' a difference
