How do these fittings work?

I put an AOD in my '66 Fastback and have a leak at the cooling line fitting. I am not familiar with this type of connection, and have no idea what the black plastic part does.

I thought the lower line was the radiator return line.

Any help is appreciated.

Take it out, wrap it with teflon tape, screw it back in.

My AOD has adapters that screw in and seal with a gasket seat. Then they accept standard inverted flare fittings on the lines.

Black plastic part? That bit at the flair nut that is leaking? That just looks wrong.

EDIT: On closer inspection those look like quick disconnect air fittings. Press them in towards the tranny and the line willl pull right out (maybe with some coaxing if it has been in there a while or was forced in).
