Most guys do it for weight or feel. The stock PS can be kinda overpowering (literally).
If it works, a really neat alternative (if the feel bothers you) is a 94-95 rack. There is scuttlebutt out there that it works. The steering in my 94 is really nice (requires more effort, etc) compared to the QR rack in the 88 GT.
