My Mustang sounds like a Bus

It all started about 2 days ago. I was driving my Mustang and I was going over small bumps and irregularities over the road. While I was driving over the small bumps and irregularities over the road, it was making very loud creaking and squeaking sounds that were coming from the rear end and from the front wheels. At first, I thought that the noise was coming from the interior, but it wasn't. The creaking sounds exactly just like the sound inside a bus when the bus goes over bumps and potholes. And it is very loud.
Today, this noise got louder and it was consistent all the time whenever I was going over any bumps and irregularities on the road. We have been having very cold weather up here for the past 2 days. I am wondering whether or not the cold weather is the cause of this loud creaking noise coming from the rear and front wheels. This has never happened before.

Do you think that there is something wrong with the rear end suspension and the front end suspension? I only have 18,700 highway miles on my Mustang. And I have been driving it for 2 winters now and it has NEVER made this noise before. What could be wrong? Why is the rear end and the front end making this loud creaking noise while I am going over small bumps and irregularities on the road? Please help me out here. Thanks.

I just hope that nothing is so frozen up underneath the car that it will break. I just realized the loud creaking noises when the temperature dropped into the low 20's here yesterday and today. It sounds just like riding in a bus when a bus's suspension makes all those loud creaking noises when it goes over bumps and potholes. These noises in my Mustang are definitely coming from the rear suspension and also from the front suspension. The rear suspension is much noisier than the front. The funny thing about all this is that I drove this same car for the last 2 winters in this same cold weather and it never made these noises before. Why did it not make these noises for the last 2 years of being driven in subzero cold weather and why all of a sudden is my Mustang doing this now? I can't understand why it is doing this when it didn't do it in the very cold weather in the last 2 years of driving it. Does anybody here know?

nobody knows the trouble you've seen (heard) nobody knows the sorrow......

actually we all do, it's a mustang that was designed pre 1979. the supsensions creak and make all kinds of funky noises when it's cold, when it's hot and when it's just warm. I UNDERSTAND that you've never noticed it before, but over time things just loosen up and get crappier than when they started. Wash you suspension real good to get all the salt off. this kinda stuff exaggerates it i'm sure.

like a bus

Ron-
Thought I would try to help with some feedback since I like your political statements and agree with them (also live in MA). Not sure if its any help but...

I think you should definitely get your car checked out! That sound is not right and, while the temperature may have caused the problem, there is a problem. I recently had lowering springs installed on my gt. After about 10 minutes of driving I realized there were all kinds of noises coming from the undercarraige when I hit bumps. Turns out one of the springs was not installed properly. What I found interesting was that while the noises came from all over, the problem was only one spring. When one thing is wrong with one part of the suspension, the weight of the car is disbursed improperly throughout the rest of the car. So one problem can cause many noises.

I think something is wrong with your suspension based on your description of the noises it makes. You seem worried about it (like I was when I was driving around with a mis-aligned spring) so I think you should trust your judgement and get it checked out. Something is cracked or out of place, maybe caused by the temperature. Driving it in its condition could likely cause larger problems than what you have now. Plus if you are driving your rwd vehicle in these conditions (snow on and off, freezing cold) you need your suspension to be in good shape.
Sorry I can't be more specific about what the actual problem may be. Good Luck and please post the resolution to the problem.

this guy worries soooo much though. I would say clean the undercarriage and suspension, then see how things go. please realize that right after you wash it, it'll sound worse though RON. then if all else fails, pay someone to check it out. but realize its a MUSTANG it's not a cadillac. ya know, i wonder if something happened when you turned off your traction control in the snow??

Thank you for your input 02Knightrider.

I am definitely going to get it checked out when I get my oil changed again which will be very soon. I also think that there is something wrong with my car all because I have owned this car now for over 2 years and it has never made this creaking sound before. I think that you are right. Maybe something has cracked or broke in the suspension because of all this really cold weather that we have been getting lately here. I drive my V6 Mustang every day and have driven it in the winter for the last 2 years and it never made these sounds before.

I am wondering whether there might be something wrong with my rear springs or shock absorbers? Maybe one of the springs are cracked or one of the shock absorbers are internally rusted or have no gas/oil in them causing the rear end to make this loud creaking noise. I realized that the noise is coming from the back of the car while I was driving it today. I am going to make an appointment to bring my car in next week to Ford for an oil change and for them to look into the problem.

And I am glad that you have the same political beleifs like I do. It's good to know that there are a few decent Federalists left in this communist/socialist state of Massachusetts. I am a right wing conservative who always listens to Jay Sevrin on 96.9 FM on weekdays between 3:00PM-7:00PM. Then I listen to Laura from 7:00PM-10:00PM. These 2 people are like us and they hate all liberals. I recommmend that you listen to both of them. You will like what they say. God Bless You and God Bless America :flag:

You just raised a good point 30AnnivStang. I never thought about this before. Maybe something broke when I was trying to get traction in the snowstorm that we had here a few weeks ago in mid December. I know that I was spinning the rear tires for over 20 to 30 minutes and I tried everything to get traction in the ice and snow. I ended up shutting off the traction control a few times to gain traction. I then turned the traction control on again and left it on. Maybe this incident broke something in the rear end and is causing the rear end to make these loud creaking noises.

Not to sound cranky or condescending, but...

It's a Ford. It's a big piece of *****!!!!!! It creaks. Get used to it. :D

Seriously, the Mustang, as much as it may pain you to think it, is NOT a quality-built automobile. It works, it runs, it gets the job done, but refinement it ain't. If you want a car that doesn't squeak and groan, go buy yourself something more tightly-constructed like a BMW. Next time you're in there, push on the center console. See how the whole thing creaks and moves? That's what Grade-F materials get you. :)

I would not be worried about it. At most, take it in to a Mr. Muffler and get a quick suspension lube job to make yourself feel better.

Frankly, if just your suspension is creaking, and your interior is quiet, you're ahead of where most of us are....

Yeah, I have read all about the interior problems that Mustang owners are experiencing with these cars. Mine so far just creaks on the exterior. I will just get it checked out and have them lube the undercarraige suspension and bushings. Other than that I don't know what else to do. It seems that everyone here is having a squeak issue with their Mustang. Let's hope that the 2005+ Mustang that will be built will be quieter and not squeak like the current ones.

This is as far as I have read and will read no more, I will no longer put my self through the pain, I am not a sadist!! I am a full blown commie coming to take over actually I'm Canadian close enough!

I think I'll join you. I'm Democrat.

On another note, Ron, you worry too damn much.

Caveman hears ya. Caveman didn't think it was possible for anyone to get progressively dumber with each post. :rlaugh: Caveman has now been proven wrong.

Want quiet? Buy a Lexus.

actually that squeaking noise means when your car hits exactly 19,739.2 miles, it will blow up. its probably nothing major, but i can tell you for sure that nothing is freezing in massachusetts' 20 degree weather (i live in MA, but im in school in PA right now). as a mechanical engineer major, i can tell you the cars are designed to be able to properly function below 20 degrees.
