i'm still learning with this kinda stuff. but when he steps on the gas, is the driveshaft turning?

i'm pretty much a moron when it comes to this stuff, but my guess is if the driveshaft is spinning, its something with the rear end. if the driveshaft isn't spinning, i'd like to say it could possibly be something in the tranny.

does it do this in all gears? like low, 2nd, drive, overdrive, reverse.

it only moves in drive and over drive so could it be the torque converter or possibly the gears stripped

Fluid's a good thing to check. My V6 tranny was low on tranny fluid a couple of times, and the torque converter would slip a little bit when I got on it. I can imagine it would slip a lot with a lot more torque.

the same thing recently happened to my dads yukon xl. I'm not sure exactly what went wrong but some little part popped out of place. Just make sure he stops driving it right away and tows it to a shop. It probably won't be too expensive.
