I just made my own bracket. It did require drilling in the lower grill but the holes are not noticeable when the plate is removed. My design allows easy removal and does not damage the paint at all. I made it out of aluminum and I gave it a brushed finish. I did it all for $15 and a Sunday afternoon. Do you all like this bracket or should I have done something different? not bad, nice mounting spot too, i just prefer plates in the center of the car, off to the side distracts me edit: actually im liking it more and more there.. I've got to find where to mount mine soon too, If anyone's ever been in wall/belmar NJ you know their favorite thing to do is tint/license plate tickets.
I feel so bad for you guys that have to run front plates. It just screws up a nice looking front......... Hope AZ never goes to it.
Congrats on your job it looks clean and well done, however if I had to choose I would probably get that hideaway license plate bracket system I've seen that allows you to run with or w/o the plate showing.
I think the concept and craftsmanship are excellent, but for some reason I can't handle the plate being offset. Nice job though.
I don't like the design. I think the only viable option for people who run front plates is to place it behind the bumper cover in the opening. If I lived in a state that required front plates, there would be no doubt, I'd just place it on the dash.
unfortunately most states that require a front plate are smart asses about the on the dash thing. i've seen cops drive right past people without a front plate, but with people on the dash they pull over because it points it out to them that its not in the correct place. they also consider it a hazard because if you were to get into a crash and the plate is not correctly secured it could fly off and hit one of your passengers or even you. i forget what state it was, but they have the ingenious idea of requiring a front plate, but having it so its a sticker on the windshield that the police department can scan or something like that. like others stated, great design, but i don't like how its offset. alot of the import guys call it JDM. i don't wanna hear someone call my mustang JDM.
Here in the Portland area, our friendly police love to take a few minutes of your time when they see the plate in the window, even if it is mounted. As a bonus, you get to pay the fix-it ticket fee $50 each time. After two donations to local government, a guy is encouraged to find a solution fast. I tried running without it too, that was another $50. Also, the police like to see people running with it hiding in the lower opening, I asked. Oregon law requires that it be mounted on the extreme front of the car and that it be completely visible; with shortfalls in local government funding, revenue of any kind is welcome. I did not want the plate up high on the bumper and if I centered it down low, it covers the lower opening; I will need all the cool air I can get when I put my supercharger on. I considered the hideaway plate but it did not seem very sturdy to me and it still can be seen on the car even when it is put away. I also have to state that I am up on the current import lingo, so the use of the term JDM was new to me. I have to admit that I may get into trouble putting the smack down on fellas using the works “Ford Mustang” and “Japanese Domestic Market” in the same sentence.
hah, i only know JDM cause i have a bunch of friends that we'll be walking in a parking lot or something and all of a sudden i'll hear "thats jdm yo" i'm just like, oh god hah. i did the hideaway plate because i didn't want to drill into my bumper. i was going to do something originally like yours, just in the center, buti figure hey if its not sturdy enough and it rips off i'll just say that the crappy new jersey roads that i drive on ripped it off and i can't find it. hopefully its not a law much longer, but i doubt its a high priority to take that law away. and i know what you mean about the state wanting it in the most extreme front you can get. being partially covered is unacceptable to cops around here. funny though, driving home from the track with my number and everything on the window, plate down, drove thru the worst part of central NJ for cops. who would pull over people just to scare the **** out of them, and no problems. got passed by quite a few cops. have done it several times. if i ever get pulled over for it i'll just tell them someone must of messed with my plate and i'll get out and put it up.
Nice job The offset thing does look odd at first glance, but since it's removable and barely noticeable once removed it seems to serve its purpose at a very reasonable price! VA is a state the requires the front plate and I found out once just how well the State boys enforce it I bought a '95 GT that used to be a PA car and had no plate bracket mounted on it. The dealer (in VA) said they wouldn't put it on there at my request I had no front plate and got away with it for just over a year. Then one day, I happened to pass a VA State Trooper in a 25 mph zone in the opposite direction. I saw him look at me as I was looking at him Then I saw him pull a quick U turn and on came the lights It was a white Stang with tinted windows (legal limit, but tint always looks darker on light cars). He said I was golden until he passed and looked and saw I had a VA rear tag... Now with the GT500 front, there was no way in hell I was going to drill holes in the bumper, but I don't want anymore BS tickets! What I did was use black wire ties and hook the top holes to the lower grill and used stick on felt along the bottom where the plate touches the painted part of the bumper. Now all I have to do is cut the ties and the plate comes off in seconds with no evidence left behind and only takes a couple seconds to put back. In VA... (plate shows its battle scars) Out of state...
id be scared the plate would bang around. my friend did that with his f250 though with zip ties. i hate front plates. i hate front plate brackets too, they are always so big and bulky. on like mercedes and bmw and stuff they have a cool thing where the bracket is painted body color and looks semi tasteful vs big tacky black textured plastic.
I ditched the front license plate here in California Hate the way the plate looks. My tint is illegal. Legal tint is 70% and mine is 16% on front and 3% on the rear windows. No tickets on that either but usually the windows are rolled down in nice weather and the mustang sees rain only in emergencies.
My wire ties are pulled tight and it takes quite a bit of force to get the bottom of the plate to move. If it flopped around, I definitely would have worked on another method of attachment
