rear end shear pin bolt

taking apart the rear end of my 98 gt 8.8 traction loc... the shear pin retainer bolt is super loc tited in and the head is now round...help!

Craftsman sells a bolt extractor that works with rounded heads...id heat it as well. Youll need to replace it with a new bolt..

Good luck as it's very tight. Might have to try some heat.

I always use an thick wall impact socket to remove that bolt knowing it's easy to round it off.

tried a bolt extractor... just cant get enough torque on the damn thing under there.. afraid to heat it with all that oil and right next to the gas tank

Clean out the rear lube as good as you can and just be careful with the torch...its not uncommon to have to put a little heat on it, heat the carrier around the bolt.

Instead of using a torch you can buy a heat gun from Home Depot. It will take a little longer to heat up but you wont have to use an open flame. Another trick would be to heat it up and then use a can of compressed air upside down to freeze it then heat it back up to try to break the bond. You can also try tapping the next size down box end wrentch onto the bolt to remove it.
