steering wheel swap in 93 gt

I want this grant steering wheel and was wondering why I can't order a hub and adapter for an 87 and install it on a 93. Can't I just disconnect the airbag wire and horn and fit the 87 hub and adapter on the steering shaft? Is the steering shaft on the 93 bigger than the 87 is this why? Just trying to figure out why you have to take out the whole steering column instead of using an adapter and hub from an 87. I wonder if there is a way to fabricate one? Any help with this would be great.
