I love both. I have both...but the fuel economy is nowhere near the same like someone else said. I am lucky to get 175-200 to a tank on my 95 and I get about 300-315 on my 02. But I have never cared about gas mileage. Both are fun as hell to drive. They are both V8 Mustangs and thats good enough for me. both get looks when I am driving down the road.

Thanks for the replys. I think Im going to test drive one of each and see what one I like better. Im thinking a newer 4.6 is probably the better choice because this will be my only car (well, we have a 1989 suburban and a beater hyundai too, but whenever its not snowing ill most likely be driving the stang) I heard from a few places that the 4.6 gets significantly better mileage than the 5.0, and it kind of makes sense considering the 5.0 is dated to the 60s n 70s. Im assuming it also handles and brakes better, and when I get older forced induction might be a good route (I hear 4.6s like boost) Good opinions guys, keep it up if you have anything else for me

The 4.6 likes boost because of its low compression and its hatred to make naturally aspirated power, lol.

Alot of 5.0 guys go naturally aspirated because you can buy heads/cam/intake for less than a complete blower kit for those cars.

Either engine has its limits when it comes to boost though. Neither ones bottom end are the toughest things in the world.

But I suggest driving each one, hell, a few of each to tell the truth.

also, im torn between auto or manual, manuals are alot more fun, but auto might be better for daily driving, and less to worry about as a newer driver.. I also hear fords autos are crap, but can that be fixed with a shift kit or is it the tranny itself?

IMO, if you want a decently quick car that attracts the tail and sounds mean, go with the PI 4.6 (99-04). i would steer clear of 94-95 stangs all together. The 5.0's in the fox body's were much better for modding, also, the manual in the 94-95's is a t-5, not really gonna handle a lot of power, the t3650 isnt perfect, but its definitely better and cleaner feeling. id go 99-04, but my heart still lies with the 96-8 cobra when it comes to looks...

:D....joking aside, the compression between the two is actually about the same. The 4.6L SOHC is much more volumetrically efficient that the old 5.0L OHV was. The 4.6L engine has only 281ci to fill, where the 5.0L has to fill 302ci. Right off the bat, when you get two identical blowers spinning at the exact same RPM, the 4.6L has an easier time filling the smaller cylinders by comparison. Combine that with the fact that the aluminum heads (which will allow more timing because of their ability to more quickly remove heat from the combustion chamber) on the PI 4.6L are head over heels better flowing, with a more efficient combustion design than the old E7TE iron castings on the earlier OHV engines (PI castings actually rival some of the aftermarket 302 heads) and you'll see why they respond so well to forced induction.

I really like the 96-98 cobras, but people are trying to get 15 grand for any of them under 100,000 miles... whats a realistic price for a mid mileage one? How about compared to a PI SOHC 4.6?
