I have a set of turbines that I want to mount either drag radials or slicks on. If i get drag radials, what size should I get? Slicks? I dont want to have to do any massaging to the fenders or anything like that. Thanks a lot.
Drag Radial = 235/60/15 Slicks...26x10? Will they fit a turbine and the fenderwell? I dont know much about all out slicks Based on your sig, you dont need anything more than drag radials
If you still have stock axles, I wouldn't even worry about any sticky tires until you upgrade. Stock 26 spline axles are really easy to snap on a hard launch with slicks or drag radials. Check out 5.0 resto, they have kits for upgrading to 31 spline axles. After that, just keep your tires around 26" diameter. Some people make the mistake of running 28" tires, and thats usually when you run into rubbing problems. A lot of guys can run 275/50-15 with no problems, and that is a 26" tire. Of course, thats too wide for the turbine wheel.
So you're suggesting drag radials that are about 3" wide, and slicks that are 10" wide 235s would fit on a damn civic. At the very least run a 255, which will easily clear. You would be better off with a 275/50. But to run that you will have to flip your quad shocks and massage the inner fender a little. But it's really no big deal and you will not have to touch the outer fender or lip. 10" slicks would really be pushing it. God, where do I start. Please don't respond when you have no clue what you're talking about. First, stock axles are 28 spline and actually reasonably strong. They're kind of hit or miss though. I have seen many last behind 500+ rwhp and sticky tires. At the same time, I broke one behind a stock motor. It was a 6250 launch at the track, but it still shouldn't have broken. If you're going to upgrade axles 5.0 resto would not be the place to go. Get them from a reputable company such as Moser, Strange, etc. There is no "mistake" when running a 28" tire. People run a 28" tire for a reason. More contact area, more sidewall, more flex, more traction. Especially when using a slick on a 5spd car. I run a 28x9" slick with absolutely no clearance issues. My buddy runs a 275/60 (28") on 15x10s with no clearance issues. Finally, a 275 is not too wide for a turbine wheel. Another friend of mine has been through several sets of 275s on turbines without an issue. I run 275s on 10 holes which are the same width and never had a problem. They stay at 14psi all the time, cruise at 75 on the highway, go around corners, and I drive the wheels off this car. Oh, and it's the only way to make turbines or 10 holes look good...
I had some 26x9 Hoosier slicks on my old Turbines. My car went 1.69 with them. Also had some 26x10.5 ET Streets. Have seen 275/50s etc etc... Every tire under the sun has probably been on a 10 hole or turbine rim. My suggestion would be a 275/50 DR or a 26x9-10.5 slick or ET Street.
Wow, that was aggressive. Ease up, bud. First off, he probably suggested 235/60s because stock tire size on turbines are 225/60s, and you can get DRs in 235/60s. Also, 235s are about 9.25" wide. Second, I said "26 spline" because I was thinking "26 inch tall tire" in my brain. Sorry that a simple typo makes me such an ignorant prick. You can go on recommending that people use sticky tires on stock rear ends, but I hope you're sympathetic when they smash their stuff. I'm going to stick by my word choice with "mistake" on the 28" tire thing. I understand the logic, and sure there are people who do it for a reason, but I've known guys with cars that can't have people in the back seat just because their 28" tires will rub. He wanted advice on tire size, and I would hesitate to suggest 28s unless he REALLY needed them. 275/50s are not meant to fit a 7" wide wheel, but people do it anyway. NOT a recommended method, but it is possible. Again, I would hesitate to suggest putting it on a 7" wide wheel.
I bought a 1990 LX 5sp new, I ran 26X10 M/T slicks on it for 4 years on the stock 10 holes. The car would 60' in the mid to high 1.60's. I never broke anything on the car. The engine was stock except for headers, Flowmasters, off road H pipe, underdrive pulleys and I had 3.73 gears. It ran 13.40's all day at 99 MPH. I would not fear the stock axles but thats just my opinion.
I went 5-6 years on stock axles... 60's dipped into the 1.6s and launches from 3000-6250. Never had an issue. Tossed in some Ranger axles and the 3rd pass on ET Streets I snapped one. Still have the old 130K mile stockers sitting on the shelf.
Well I must be on ragged edge with my 28 spline ranger axles, and if those 235x60x15`s are (about) 9.25 wide then I got ripped because my 255`s are only 8.70 wide. I want a new measureing tape damnit
I run a 275/60 street tire, had to do the quads and the massaging. I would go to a 275/50 next time. And I have had them on a turbine wheel. Also after 20 launches on my stock axles I haven't broke them either.
I realize that some people get lucky with 28 spline axles, but then again, some people do not. I have at least 3 friends who have broken 28 spline axles, running 13, 12, and 11 second cars, and a couple of you have already admitted to breaking 28s yourselves. I guess I'm just anal about breaking stuff, so if it were me, I'd upgrade to 31 spline axles before I ran on stickies. Also, a 235/60-15 tire is 235mm (9.25") wide at the sidewall. Yes, the actual tread width is smaller. I was making a point that its wider than 3".
Well seeing as your talking to me, (I didn't see anyone else mention breaking one) my stock axles never broke and lasted hundreds of track passes. It was a 28 spline Ranger axle that broke, and from what I gather, when you purchase two of the same side Ranger axles, and spin one backwards it weakens it. It makes sense, as the metal will be stressed some from years and years of use, and as soon as you turn it the other way and hammer it, it kind of acts like bending a metal piece back and forth. Just from my experience...
Blackened88lx also admitted to breaking an axle in an earlier post. The guys that I know all broke the original 4-lug stuff, so I don't know that it had anything to do with changing the rotation direction. Makes sense, though. I dunno man, my philosophy has always been to build it right the first time rather than taking chances and breaking stuff. I sleep easier that way.
Yes, there was clearly no sarcasm whatsoever in my statement that they are 3" wide. They might as well be. I did break an axle 2nd pass ever at the track. There's no reason it should have broken. Rather than putting stronger axles in it I decided to stick to street racing, much safer in every aspect.
I understand your philosophy, but if that were the case I would have a 14 second car right now, with a built rear, T-56, and other go fast parts. Upgrading is tough when you say "do it right the first time". Seeing as the axles are stock, it's not so much he did anything wrong, it's the fact he hasn't done it at all. If you understand the risks of blowing the rear when you take it to the track on sticky tires, then you have made the precautions to do so. Line a trailer up, have friends with them, AAA etc... I'm too poor to build a "do it right" $2500 rear end before I grabbed a pair of used $150 slicks. Now I have a rear end being built this season, to help prevent another axle going. But there is a strong chance the car gets run on ET Streets or slicks again before that, and another chance I pop a Ranger axle.
the guy was asking about buying tires, then someone came in and AMTRAKED the thread with this stock axle BS, mabye he dosent wanna build his rear, and just have fun with the car
Seems lately anyone asking about having fun or doing things that aren't the best, most practicle way to do them, will get a 3 paragraph response about why it is wrong... which is 100% opinion, but posted as fact! Not talking about this particular thread per say... just something I noticed on a few threads lately! Do it my way, or your wrong and stupid seems to be the mentality!
i agree 100%, if someone wants to make a 500 hp stock block combo running stock axles... good for them, sometimes actually DRIVING the car is what people wanna do, everyone(including myself at times) gets too hung up on Dart blocks, TKO 600's bla blaaa... Then 3 years go by and you say to yourself, "ive got 10k in this car and i cant even drive it, remember when i used to beat the snots out of the stock stuff..."
