STORE BRAND OIL/FILTER MYTHS...STILL GOOD OIL?

I keep hearing, “don’t buy the store brand, it’s recycled, or its junk oil”. In fact, let’s think a bit more about this. The people that say this crap need to think before they speak! I’ve heard so many people say that the store brand is just bad oil. First off, stores like AutoZone, Advance Auto, etc. DO NOT MAKE OIL. They are getting the oil from other oil companies like Pennzoil, so you’re actually still getting good name brand oil with a different logo. Just like cereal, you have captain crunch and crisp crunch. If I took the crisp crunch and switched it with the captain crunch, would anyone ever know?

Let’s hear you insight on this matter….

I attended a Castrol seminar through work about a year ago and this question came up. The Castrol Rep's answer was the difference is in the quality and quantity of the detergents in the oil. More than the oil debate what's everyones take on oil filters? The whole Fram/Motorcraft/WIX/K&N that's where I can't even get a BS answer...

Everything I have ever heard is that WIX and Fram are garbage, K&N is good, as well as Motorcraft.

Personally I run 15w40 Motorcraft diesel oil and a MC filter.

IMO, when I put Mobil, Valvoline, Castrol, etc in my car, I can sleep easier at night. Why buy mystery oil and be stubborn about it when you really have no proof backing its quality? You spend a lot of money on your car, why not invest in good oil?

PS there is no substitute for Cap'n Crunch

I'm a label whore I use valvoline in everything. My dad had a 93 f-150 with the 300 i6 had a rear mainseal leak and he added a quart once or twice a week as needed and ran pretty much every brand out there including the 10 dollar a quart who made this 7-11 brands. Needless to say the truck went 297k with 130-140 of it being with the rearmain seal leak. Then it met its death one morning when he forgot to add oil was in a hurry and slung a rod on the interstate. Truck still made the 15 minute trip back home in that condition and then decided to seize up as he pulled in the driveway. All in all I guess it doesn't matter what ya use though as long as ya keep it changed regularly.

Purity might be the same between brands, but what (if any) detergents are included and how well the oil holds up to thermal breakdown and turning into sludge are a different matter, altogether.

That being said ... store brand oils are kind of a "you get what you pay for" thing. It won't kill your car to put it in once in awhile ... but it's sort of like the difference between cheap beer and good liquor - both will do the job, but when things go sour (like, the next morning, or if you go over 3k miles before an oil change), I'd rather have a headache than the dry heaves and a case of "duck butt." :D

Pennzoil is not anything that most folks worth their salt would consider a "quality oil." :notnice:

FWIW, I run Castrol GTX most of the time ... although I do throw in Valvoline from time to time if there's a sale that tickles my fancy. :D Basic FRAM filters are poo, but I've always had good luck with their Tough Guard filters, and the grippy texture on the back makes removal later on MUCH easier. If Motorcraft would do the same with their FL1A filters, I'd probably switch.

Also, every oil is only going to be as good as the filter you're running. If you run some flimsy, cheap-arsed store brand filter (cut one open some time and give it a look, then compare it to a high-end filter, you'll see) then it wouldn't matter if you've got the best oil on the market in your engine - it will only hold so much dirt and sludge n' crap before it plugs up and either goes into bypass mode or starts releasing clumps of poop into your engine. If you prefer an analogy, think of the difference between a cheap-o filter and a quality one as the difference between a maxi-thin for "light days," and one of those super-duper absorbant maxi pads with wings and all that for "heavy days." :D

i just run the oil with the prettiest bottle

i use valvoline in my mustang. and i use cheap oil in my DD s10 i duno why but i do.

but all i ever hear is that all the oil is the SAME OIL but different brands add different stuff to their oil.

all brands cheap and expensive will work fine, the oils job is the lubricate the engine and all oil will do that.

and i'm sure there is a benefit to running the expensive stuff but i have never expierenced it

If anyone really cares, check out the VOA's. There absolutely are discernable differences in the various oils (detergents, add packs, base stocks, etc).

I disagree with some of the filter recommendations but it really doesn't matter. The Motorcraft filter is tough to beat for the price.

Determine good oil? You're just saying something you can't backup either. Castrol is used by some of the name brand oil stores with a different logo on it. Has anyone ever heard of a problem running store brand?

I'm chaning oil in my sentra/crv this weekend so I'll check both filters like you say and post the output with pictures. Oh, I have 145k on my sentra with cheap oil. No motor problems!

There are differences in oil. Pennsylvannia based oils offer slightly better lubricating properties than texas based oils. I guess the dinosaurs in PA were fatter or something.

Castrol and royal purple are some of the brands that us PA oils.

There are differences in oil filters too...and honestly, the motorccraft FL-1A is a damn good filter so why us anything else??

I run Castrol GTX and an Fl-1A

For the most part of it's life, my '91 has been getting Castrol 10w30, but our local Ford dealership has dropped the price of its oil changes to $17.00, so the last 3 or 4 oil changes has been with Ford Motorcraft 10w30 oil and a Motorcraft filter. I've noticed my car running a little smoother and stronger with the Ford oil, but no one around here sells Ford 10w30 oil, not even the dealership! So when I need a quart, I go back to Castrol, still works really well.
