DIY rod heating?

Is this a doable idea? Machine shop is a 2hr drive so that's why i'm wondering. Can I sandwich the rod between 2 steel plates and heat it evenly with a torch? Maybe heat it in a oven to 500 F first and freeze the wrist pins? Or is that not a good idea? Thanks for any help

Are you talking about just getting the wrist pin in and out? I've just seen guys hold it in a vice and heat it with a torch.
