Progress Thread Down For A Decade - Got The Job!

Honestly, no. That won't provide enough air for a period of time long enough to spray a coat all over.

You'll need at least a fourty gallon tank, and even then, you'll stretch it's capacity. 60-80 is best.

Based on what I see in you pictures you might want to take of your cowel trim and shine a light back up into it. A small mirror will help you see all the way back. Look at the air intakes for the cabin.

That's what I figured, oh well. I guess I will start looking for a shop to spray it or maybe find a painter friend and rent a booth. I plan on doing all of the prep work myself, I've done a little bodywork and I am very meticulous. I am going to tear into it more this weekend, take off the driver door and start poking everything to see how much metal I have left. The cowl area looked good inside, just surface rust from lack of paint. I had a body shop try to fix the rust behind the drivers hinge a couple years after I bought it, but now it's back.

How do you take out the wiper arm assembly? The passenger side unscrewed but I couldn't quite see what's up with the driver side

I had another progress thread on here but it wasn't getting the feedback I was hoping for. Maybe I'm too long winded, maybe I don't post enough or maybe it's just the way it goes around here. Either way, I thought I'd give this one more shot before I pack it in. I'm not fishing for compliments, more so motivation. This car has been in pieces for the better part of a decade now and I really need the push to get it back on the road this year.

Backstory: I purchased the car in 2001 from the original owner in FL with 50k miles. She ordered it from the dealer with the Reef Blue paint, Opal interior and 5 speed trans. I drove it mostly stock for several years, only adding a King Cobra clutch and Bassani exhaust. I took the car apart in 2007 with plans for a complete restoration, and then the economy took a giant sh*t. I was laid off a few weeks later and everything changed. I had to go back to school and find a new career. I should have immediately put my car back together in it's stock form and just driven it and enjoyed it. But I'm stubborn...

So here we are, 10 years later, and my car is still in pieces. My wife hates it, it has cost me a ton of money to transport and store for all these years, and I haven't driven it since 2007. But you know what, I still love it and I always will!

So help me out guys, if it's not on the road by the end of the year I'm probably going to light it on fire!!! :flame:

Last day it was still a car in 2007:

This could also be named project "Back Track". I had most of the interior back in and then while doing a door swap, I found the rust. The driver side hinge has cancer that looks pretty bad. It looks to have been "repaired" once already. It might be in the windshield channel too, the glass is coming out next. So back out came the dash and headliner. I started drilling spot welds last night. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY!!! haha

Seems like a pretty good starting point. What sort of parts do you have waiting to go in? What are your plans?

Where's the motor currently at?

Are you going to repaint it?

Thanks, I'm hoping this cancer repair doesn't put me back too far. I'm going to build a 347, trying to determine if a Dart block is in the budget. I'll use forged internals and hope they survive the block split if I have to use the stock block. I've got a bunch of parts already, TFS 11R heads, Kooks 1 7/8" long tubes, Victor Jr. carb intake. I'm going to run the Holley Terminator Stealth EFI.

Paint is one thing I need help on. I want to keep the factory color, but I don't have 3-5k for paint. I've thought about getting a dip kit for the time being, not sure what to do.

Can anyone chime in on how to repair the area under the corner of the trunk? I've seen lots of others do the door hinge fix, but not a lot of pics or info on these pieces. It's on both sides of the trunk. It doesn't look bad in pics, but the whole area behind that piece has rust.

Would you mind posting a picture or two of the inside of the trunk area please?

When we used to replace 1/4's when foxes were still new, that area was part of the replacement 1/4.

I need to see how bad it is to tell you what I'd do. It would be good to grind that entire area (or sandblast) to see how far the rust goes.

How are you at fabricating small sections of metal?

There's a lot of welding in your future...

There's nothing like driving a car that you rebuilt yourself.

It's not about being long winded, I prefer the story that goes with the pics. If all anybody does around here is post a pic and a few words,...I got nothing to say.

But,...for whatever reason you've held onto it, I don't have to tell you that no amount of atta boys are gonna get you out in the garage,...You gotta want to do that. Having the support of a family, and a community like this will help, as well as having the discretionary income to do what has to be done. That, plus knowing what you can, and cannot do yourself will help as well.

It's been almost 4 years of constant work on my current project. Fortunately, I was able to do 90+ percent of the work required to get it to this point. However, if not for the efforts of a few guys here (some waaaay more than others),..I'd still be looking at an unpainted project that needed that step out of the way to move on. Once running, another stepped up to help and spent 8+ hours sorting out issues with the tune that were frustrating me to the point of changing things out to try and make it simpler to tune,....and that would've dramatically impacted the end result, of which I'm very proud of.

All this to say that you seem to have the mechanical aptitude to be able to do the stuff,.. and,...you have kept that car through thick and thin. There are guys here that will help (maybe even me.......) But nothing moves until you want it to.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I definitely look up to your hard work. I didn't really want my first post to come across the wrong way, but it would be awesome to have more interaction. I guess I need to post more and ask more questions. I'm not going to make excuses, everyone knows life gets in the way, and I blame myself for jumping in to the project too early without the means or funds to complete it. During the past decade that I've had it, I was able to go back to school for Automotive Technology and High Performance Engines. I have the knowledge, I have some room left on the credit card, and now I'm ready to get this thing rolling.

Yes I do. I just hope it's ok once I cut it open. It looks a lot better than my current situation. Here's the donor car:

Oh yeah! Just a little better. It looks like you have a clue about panel replacement.

Let me know if you need any technical advice. I've worked in bodyshops since the '70's, so I'm not clueless.

I am curious to see how far the rot goes in your 1/4's above the taillights.
