Brake Hose Bracket Bolt Stripped?

I am having a problem with the bolts that hold on the front brake hose bracket to the frame. On one side the bolt will freely turn either way but will not get tighter when you turn right and will not come out when you turn left. On the other side the bolt will come out when turning to the left will not fully tighten when turning to the right. Anyone know what's going on here and how I can fix it so the bolts will firmly tighten on both sides.

Sounds like the threads are stripped out in the middle of the bolt. Have you removed it to determine this or is this part of your problem? I would cut the head off, remove it and use a new one.

I can remove one of them, so I will check the threads to see if there is any damage. On the other I can't get it out by just turning it, so I am not sure how else to get it out.

Again, it sounds like its striped in the middle. You'll need to use a dremel to cut of the head and replace it with a new bolts and nut.

A little more detail on this. The bolt goes through the bracket so you should be able to put something between the car and the bracket to create force which would tend to move the bold and bracket away from the car while you try to loosen the bolt. This should help you get it out. It can sometimes help to have a friend apply pressure while you turn the bolt.

This is my prefered method if it is possible. I only dremel/die grind/drill stuff out if I absolutely have to.

Thanks, I will try the suggestions above. One more question though...there is not actually a nut on the end of this bolt is there? If there is, I don't know how to get to it, because the bolt just seems to screw right into the frame rail which must be tapped. Is there any possibility that the threads in the framerail could be damaged? If so, how would you fix this?

The bolts are usually self tapping (it only taps into the sheet metal, no nut on the backside). In additon to the apply pressure under the bracket method you can also use vise grips to clamp on the head and pull as you turn. As stated above it is only tapped into the 14ga sheet metal so it doesnt take much to get it to re-engage teh threads.

Additionally, if it's a hex head screw, use an electric driver and put a little angled pressure on the head while wedging the backet.
