MGW shifter

Yeah, that's for sure. I like how they run articles titled '' We tell you which blower is best, and why'' then when you read the article they shed ab:taco:ely no opinion on the subject. I guess they have to please all of the advertisers.

Well...the MGW has been in my car for a couple of days now and I think I can say that I'm 100% satisfied with it! The shifts are all smooth and short and I haven't experienced any issues with noise or vibration.

As for the noise levels...I installed some Dynamat under the car (came with the MGW shifter kit) as instructed to cover up the opening around the shifter. With the stock shifter and/or Hurst the factory rubber boot sealed the opening. The car seems much quieter due to the high frequency sounds being reduced (driveline, shifter, clutch, transmission whine, etc) but in turn the engine seems louder since all I can hear now is the low frequency rumble of the exhaust! ...very cool!:nice:

The only 'negative' is that the inside of my car reeks now due to the rubber dust boot that came with the MGW...hopefully the rubber smell will go away with time and the 'new car' smell will come back.

Thanks go to anthony05gt and NastyStang113 for helping to talk me into the purchase of the MGW...I was very apprehensive about spending that kind of money after just buying the Hurst (the Hurst was only in my car for about three weeks!).
It was well worth it though ($$) for the driving enjoyment I'm getting out of my car!!

Welcome to the club. Once you've tried the MGW, it's really hard to understand why anybody would choose anything else. MGW is in a class by itself. :nice:

I'm glad to hear that you are happy with the purchase. I don't remember any rubber smell but I definitely don't have any now. I do remember cutting myself on the Dynamat. My buddy was underneath the car and was asking me if I cut myself. I didn't even realize it and told him no. Couple of minutes later I found blood all over myself and the car. Dynamat is some serious stuff. It cuts you so clean that you don't even feel it.

Yeah, the Dynamat (and the Heat shields under the car both) looked potentially dangerous!

UPDATE: I tested the car last night and it was great! No problems whatsoever!!

Then...Tonight when I drove to work I got a severe rattle at high RPM worse than the Hurst...pulled off the knob and boot, looked at everything (seemed tight and A-OK).

The only thing I could think is that maybe it was internal to the MGW shifter??

....Then I put pressure on the plastic E-brake cover and the source of the vibration reared its' ugly head. I guess I shouldn't have been lazy, not bothering to install the Dynamat on the E-brake for a "rattle fix" as per the instructions :nonono:

I figured there was no need to pull my console apart and apply the "fix" if my E-brake didn't rattle...well now it does. I'll be applying more Dynamat later this week.

-I was hoping it was just the stock shifter knob rattling so as to give me an excuse to buy a replacement but no such luck. :(

I had exactly the same experience. Didn't notice the noise until the MGW was installed, then I heard it. Applied the "fix" and haven't heard any noise since.

I asked George at MGW if I could leave the dynomat out. He told me that the 2008s have some additional sound deadening so I might not need it - so I have none in my car. There is additional noise over stock but it's "good" noise. I had a local speed shop do mine. This weekend I went under the car to make sure none of the bolts loosened up. I noticed that the shift linkage block was pointed to the wrong side. Hard to understand how that mistake was made since it has a printed arrow on it with clear directions right on the block to point the arrow to the driver's side. I sent an email to MGW on Saturday asking if there was potential for damage. I didn't expect a reply until Monday since they're closed on the weekends but received an email from George on Sunday - he didn't think anything would be damaged but it might bind and would shift much better if pointed to the correct side. I fixed it myself and I did feel a difference although, even backwards, it shifted great. I can't compare the mgw to other shifters but for build quality and maybe more importantly, customer service, they can't be beat.

I noticed there IS additional sound deadening in my 08 (some 'fordomat' type stuff that covers up the holes that George instructs you to cover with the Dynamat. Still, I added some Dynamat underneath and when I fixed the e-brake rattle today I also added some more above in front and behind the shifter hole in the transmission hump. I think with the additional Dynamat and a set of those thick rubber all weather Mustang floormats (thought they were hideously ugly but actually look cool and 'sporty' when in the car if you have an all black interior) it's actually quite a bit more quiet than the stock factory car.

That sucks about the speed shop install...it's one thing if a garage hack like me chooses not to read the instructions but it's freaking lame if the "professionals" don't! You shouldn't have had to fix it yourself!

There were reasons I couldn't do the install which aggravates me because it's simple enough plus, if I would have screwed it up, I would have no one to blame but myself. Next decision to make is whether to buy the new mgw shift assembly with the 5 speed graphic. Supposed to be available soon. Finally, I still can't get over how great the 2nd to 3rd shift is.

Ditto to all!!

I'm waiting for the 5 speed graphic shift knob too...and yeah, the 2-3 shift is unbeatable!!

I've owned and driven plenty of manual transmission cars and I couldn't get a clean 2-3 shift with the factory or Hurst shifters. With the MGW it's effortless.

You could still add a little Dynamat to the top of the transmission hump easily enough (you just have to pull the knob and boot...and while you're at it you can confirm they did the top part of the installation correctly!). For what it's worth I also managed to install the e-brake fix without pulling the console (in fact I never pulled the console for any part of the installation) although it would have been way easier without the console in place.

Gripper

If you don't mind. Post a bunch of photos of it installed and give us a review. I'm running the MGW Black Ball but want something else and that's my first choice as of right now.

Hope you can see this

I like this shifter knob a lot. Very nice in the cold of winter or the heat of summer. Like all MGW stuff, top shelf.
