My blood pressure is up and I need to get at least some of my former fitness back.

So I started swimming again today after 6 months of basically doing no exercise.

IMO, swimming is the best exercise for a total body workout.

What do you folks do for fitness?

Yes your right. Swimming is a very good fitness workout because you have to use your whole body and since your in the water it feels like your not doing much work and you dont see yourself sweat but it truly is one of the best.

For my fitness routine I go to the gym about 3 times a week. I lift weights mostly since Im trying to bulk but I never leave without going to the elliptical for 20 minutes. I have a knee problem so I cant use the treadmill all that much.

I run 3 miles a day. Usually on a treadmill. My blood pressure has always been about 110/70 my whole life, but I've still managed to be a fatass before. Swimming is awesome though. Lots of good excercise without a whole lot of load on the joints. I wish I could swim, but it just doesn't fit into your workout when you're on the road so much.

I lift weights 4-5 times a week, and do cardio when I can, usually the elliptical. The most important part though is your diet. Depending on if your trying to loose weight, gain weight, bulk up, etc, your diet can vary a ton. For me, I'm 5'9" and 155lbs, and I'm trying to maintain my weight while building more muscle. I try and eat 50-60 percent protein, and split the remaining percentage between carbs and fats. Since I've been eating more healthy and lifting on a regular basis, I've lost about 10 lbs and I have seen a big difference in muscle definition. Good luck man!

I was a Personal Trainer back in the college days and this is good advice to combine diet and excercise. Swimming is great excercise, but I always found swimming to be hard to be consistent with. It was easy for me to find excuses not to swim...too many people in the pool, water too cold....etc. I would combine your swimming with some other form of training like running or eliptical training. My wife teaches a spin class and it is a great workout. Cardio work is the key to reducing blood pressure and stress. You gotta get that heart rate up, but start slow and then increase the intensity. Good Luck!

I've been all about the mountain biking since I'm next door to a local trail. Then I supplement it with 2-3 days a week of weight lifting before work. Once a month or so, I'll try to get a good hike in. I combine it with generally just eating less and taking it easy on refined sugar & cholesterol. Crazy dieting and intense workouts are just not something I ever see myself doing until I'm old. But what I do now I can do forever.

i don't know about biking any more ... i used to ride to work EVERY SINGLE DAY for about 10 years. i was really into biking and would ride up to 30 miles a day a couple of days a week. now when i ride, my hands get all numb in a few minutes from the way they sit on the handlebars. i think i must have damaged something. so riding isn't for me any more. :(

we have been doing the natural foods thing for a while now ... not really watching calories or protein or anything like that, just making sure everything we eat is as natural as possible. any we are doing everything we can to stay away from high fructose corn syrup.

i still cheat every so often and have to get one of those sausage egg and cheese bagels and hash browns at mcdonalds though. :nonono:

even though i hadn't done any exercise for a long time, my weight has actually done down a few pounds (to about 195) from a few months ago. probably from losing muscle, but at least i'm under 200.

I know how that goes. I managed to deal with it with the right fit and equipment (bar height, seat position, grips + gloves). I still get it, but it's not as bad as when I first started back into riding.

Anyway, I think the best fitness program is just one that you can stick with forever. You don't need to be ripped and you don't need to win an Ironman. Just get up, move around, do things, eat less, cook for yourself and try to pick up at least one or two good physical activities a week, something fun, not torturous. All my grandparents who are pretty damn old, healthy and happy do just that. They keep going and going and going. They never worried about protein/carb ratios or interval training or lifting weights.

That reminds me, I have a gift certificate to the local rock climbing place I need to spend.

i miss rock climbing. me and a couple of my friends always used to go this gym but that's been easily 6 years now since we went last. my problem is i have two jobs that are predominately sit at a desk all day. Diet has been pretty much my only way to regulate my weight as i just don't have the time to hit a gym. I keep telling myself to just get out there every morning and at least hit the eliptical but that just doesn't happen. I agree with the sexorcising.
