what kinda power can a t 5 hold

usually good for around 300 tq, but thats due to some tolerance issues in the building of them. With the right rebuild kits they can handle a good amount over that. Usually requires dropping a decent chunk of change though. Theres a billion threads on this forum about t5 specs and other trans options. Just have to dig around a bit.

And in terms of difficulty, T5s are one of the easiest transmissions to go through IMO. So if you decide to go that route, with a manual and a little patience and theres quite a bit you can do with them.

Trans ratings are in torque values as HP is a function of tq x rpm.

T-5s are rated at 275 ft-lbs of torque for the 85-89 models and 300 ft-lbs of torque for the 90+ models.

If you notice, the early years are LESS than the rating oS a stock 5.0. There is no set number really. You can break one with a stock engine, while some guys driving around with 350HP perfectly fine with one

I drove with mine at 500+ horsepower until I decided to take it out. It never broke. And no, I drove it HARD and had about 30-40 passes at the track on that trans with drag radials.

Bottom line, there's no guarantee. Some guys break em at stock power levels. One thing I made sure to never do was miss third. That's the number one killer of t5's.

I'm currently running 425wrhp through mine and it is hanging in there. I am pretty easy on it and don't really bang on the shifts at all but I know I am on thin ice with that kind of power.

The trans is at 107K so I just treated her to a change with some Royal Purple and we will see if we can continue to keep her going.

My stock T5 went down the 1/4 track 200 times. I had 292HP / 312TQ to the wheels, then I added a Vortech S-trim which pushed it over 450HP. When I changed to the 347 Stroker I thought I'll upgrade. Well I didn't have the cash so I bolted the stock T5 to it. It's been retired now but it was good for 17 years and never actually broke.

I had a similar expierence with mine, held 540RWHP/742RWTQ...drove it like I stole it, but the car only 60ftd in the 1.65-1.70 range so it was soft off the line. I did explode the insides a few times with far less hp/tq. If it hooks hard they are very easy to break...

I've seen at least one 10 second car run on slicks with a stock T5 and it lasted a good long while even with WOT shifting on slicks. I've also seen some pretty strong running cars run 2.3 T5's with great success.

Don't make a habit of power shifting (especially 3rd gear) it it should hold up a fine for a long time. Changing it out for something tougher would be the sensible thing to do, but damnit if I have yet to see a high torque capacity trans like one of the various a 3550/TKO units out there, shift as smoothly as the good old T5 yet.

My TKO shifts about the same as, or maybe just a little notchier than my T5 did, but my T5 was complete crap. I've had T5's in other cars that were a little better, but once you've had a T56 you're kinda ruined...everything else sucks. When you really hammer on the TKO hard, it does better. Easy normal driving is when it's noticable.

I have plans for an MGW shifter for my TKO, so we'll see if that improves it any.

I've been 10.17 @ 132 on a T-5 with the stock gearset.

There are companies out there that make better gearsets (Liberty & ProMotion?) that will basically hold more power than the actual T-5 CASE can handle.

Race prepped T-5s are actually a nice option because they're lighter than most transmissions and they shift smoother than a lot of other transmissions.

I'm a firm believer the more you beat them the longer they last

Mmmmm yeah. Can't say I agree with that, LOL. I got two more of these If you need pics of them too..

after blowing 2 wc t-5s one 2nd gear one 3rd and a g-force i went with a tko 600 and have had zero issues since. the g force blew 3rd and i was already in gear rolling and just mashed it at 3k. i was probably making around 400hp at the time according to the butt dyno.

That is impressive...

I have yet to take my lx to the track but my understanding is when you are banging gears at the track it can really put the strain on the trans. I guess you can do the same on the street to some degree but the launches and cracking off every gear has to take it toll.

Actually the clutch is the weak link. The stock clutch after launching on slicks to try to get 13's basically stock gave up the ghost in under 9000 miles. I switched to a King Kobra and for what my mods were at the time was just perfect (love the light pedal). I spent more time at the track and with addition of the FIORE Micro Click Firewall Adjuster and Quadrant I got great life out of that King Kobra. Then I got the Spec Stage III clutch which I hate. So all in all the T5 went beyond than what it was attended for.
