So I have my rear O2's programmed out of the loop due to the O/R pipe. Maybe this is a silly question, but recently one of my front O2's decided to throw a trouble code. Of course I could and should replace the front sensors, but for the sake of my check book, can I simply swap the ones in the front with the ones in the rear? Seeing as how there being a bad rear one makes no matter to the computer, or are the fronts and rears fundamentally different?

They have different part numbers because the electrical connectors are keyed from the factory to prevent accidental interchange. Remember Ford uses the same parts in a lot of different applications. For some cars, it is possible to connect the wiring harness up wrong. Very bad results will occur if the front/rear or left/right O2 sensors are swapped.

The layout of the Mustang prevents accidental interchange for the most part.

The aftermarket units simply omit the keys so they will work in all locations.

If you want to take rear factory units and move to the front, it may be necessary to cut the key tabs from the O2 sensor electrical connector. Not very hard.
