shaking shifter

anybody ever get this? i notice it if my trac control goes on and the car is really looking to get traction, like in snow, the shifter arm shakes like mad. also, i live down a STEEP driveway and sometimes if i have to back up it and its wet ill get some wheel hop and a nasty little shake in the shifter...anyone else have this?

btw ive got an mgw if that helps.

my MGW is pretty stiff. i mean it vibrates, but doesnt shake as bad as you're describing.

diagnosis:

check the 4 bolts that hold the tranny base to the tranny. they may have come loose.

possible busted tranny mount

Shifter is bolted directly to the trans, so anytime you get driveline shake, the shifter will shake.

If you rev your engine in nuetral, you'll notice the shifter pitches to the left.

Any driveline chatter will cause it to shake as well

thanks for the info guys...i dont get any stick movement at any other time ( other than shifting of course )its rock solid . im thinking it may not be a huge deal right now but the fact that it could be the whole tranny moving isnt good.

hate to bring back something this old..but if it is the bolts how much do you think the fix would cost..should i go to ford or someplace else?

shaking from the shifter is normal in the situations you described. as another memeber said, the shifter is mounted directly onto the trans, if the trans moves so does the shifter.

This can be eliminated by going to solid engine and transmission mounts. If it is too bad it could be one or more of your mounts are broken.

mine does a lot of vibrating.. I've noticed a few times if I drive around with my hand on the shifter the whole time about 2 of my fingers go numb lol
