The V8 Mustang's fuel economy is no worse than the other 80% of the other vehicles out there on the roads. And it is not cars it is the fuel source - fossil fuel that is the real enemy. We need to switch to combustible fuel sources that can be produced and consumed with *far* less environmental impact.
In one possible scenario for instance, Ethanol is produced (harvesting, milling, refining and delivery to the pump) using Ethanol as the fuel source for this process. Besides grain and switchgrass, many orgainc waste products are candidates for making Ethanol. The US produces many thousands of tons of sawdust and wood chip waste ever year. A prime candidate for making Ethanol. It can produced and consumed "locally", avoiding the need for long pipelines or long tankers journeys. This way an alomst completey closed carbon loop is achived where we're introducing very little additional CO2 into the atmosphere, greatly reducing global warming effects. Bruning fossil fuels by contrast means were taking those large carbon deposits from undergorund and setting them free into the atmosphere - in vast amounts; hence the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Global warming is reality but to combat it we need real world, practical solutions starting - yesterday, not knee jerk reaction like 'Destroy all cars'.
This means spending money on research & development for better engine technolgy, more imortantly, making alternative fuels a national / global priority. The politicos on either side aren't gonna get serious about starting America down the road to energy independence unless we, Joe Public start pressuring them hard to do so. ****, there is going to be big money to be made along the way by becoming a world leader in clean, eco-friendly fuel technology, so don't anyone whine that it will cost to much money. That's bull**** and not nearly as much as it'll cost taxpayers to repair the damage from all the tornados, floods, droughts and crop failures that are comming down the pike with the global climate changes that go with global warming. Hurricane Katrina type catastrophies are going to happen a lot more often if don't start repairing the damage we've done to our planet already.
I like my V8 muscle car and I want all of our kids to be able to grow up in world that isn't s a spolied, runined ****hole - we can have both if the will is there and we all take the problems we're facing as a planet seriously.
