What is the Battery Blanket for?

Some of you might remember that my battery blanket was chewed by a mouse in the beginning of the winter. I am wondering if it is a big deal if I just get rid of it. I am assuming it is for protection from the cold but I wanted to make sure it is not there to protect the battery from engine heat. My car is only driven in the summertime so I am hoping I can just toss it. I am afraid to know how much Ford charges for the thing.

Usually battery blankets are preventive measures for heat soak. They sell aftermarket ones which are made of a reflective aluminium material and should be more effective then OEM. If you gotta replace it I'd say go with one of those. Summit Racing has them.

Depending on where you live battery blankets may or may not live up to their expectations. Here in Arid-zona the average outside temperature is just slightly less than the surface of the sun so battery blankets aren't quite as effective as they'd be elsewhere.
