What would cause this rocker arm damage?

I have a set of crane golds that I took off my car. I didn’t set these up, they were on the car and adjusted when I bought it. A few years ago I was in the engine, saw the damage and replaced them. Yesterday I was cleaning the garage and came across them. It has me wondering, what would cause this damage? And are they junk?

I should’ve mentioned they are pedestal mount.
Something can still be out of alignment on that rocker/valve. Throw a good one on and rotate the engine and see if it walks the roller over to that same side. Hit the top of the valve with a sharpie and see how the contact patch looks. You sure those are designed to be pedestal mount?

Yea they are pedestal mount. I did end up putting some other rockers arms on. At the time I shimmed them correctly, having a good contact patch, preload, etc. There were actually quite a few like this, though I can’t remember how many off the top of my head. Maybe the previous owner set the lash wrong?
