Gears & Differentials

Who has changed their gears? Added differentials? What do you have? How do you like them? What would you recommend? How about upgrading to an 8.8?

I want to at least change the gears on mine to a 3.73 (completely arbitrary number based on 2 jumps up from my 3.31). I also want a limited slip differential as I am not happy with the one wheel spinout!!! Another member advised against a Detroit locker as they are not fun for everyday driving. So I pose the questions to you, O Gurus of all things Stang, so that the masses may share in your wisdom :worship:

My advice would be to ask yourself what you want the car to do for you? If you want to go full tilt in the near future with power adders (supercharger, turbo, etc) I say do it right and put in the 8.8 when you can get one. Since this style mustang is new these will not be available en masse for a while yet, though I have seen at least one on Ebay which you could probably have delivered for about $1500 and that would pretty much bullet proof you to any shock you plan to put on the drivetrain. If you just want more oomph I would say go with the 3.73 or 4.10 and a limited slip thru Ford Racing with a rear end girdle and you should be fine for most upgrades. I know most performance people say if you are going for a power adder to go with the 3.73, if not go with the 4.10, but that is with the V8's. With the torque curve being different for our V6's I would probably lean towards the 3.73 with a manual and with the auto either 3.73 or 4.10. On mine I personally plan on making some healthy power (300+ hp) and I will be putting in a 3.73 with Ford Racing limited slip and a girdle and if in the future I get the itch to go move up to 400+ then I will definitely be putting in an 8.8.

I am pretty sure that Scrming has an 8.8 is his. Wonder where he got it? Anyway, I found this website and it has everything I am looking for. I am particularly interested in the Posi L/S. How would that differ from the True Trac or Ford racing differential?

scrming has the stock 7.5" with t-lok and 4.10 gears. Your best bet is a truetrac if you plan on launching hard at the track.

Yep, what Jimp said... LOL!

I think my 7.5 will hold up as long as I stay with regular street tires and don't go with slicks...plus I have an automatic and only launch at about 1500RPM... Next year I may look at putting a girdle on and a truetrac in... So for now I'll be sticking with the 7.5... which I guess is a pretty good weight savings over the 8.8... ????

I got new rear lower control arms installed yesterday to help keep that 7.5 in place! LOL!
