so my fox has a 5.0 in it and I'm pretty sure it's not the original engine. Is there any difference in the 5.0l that comes in the mustang verse the other 5.0l they out in trucks. My fox is a 1990 and I also noticed it has the old cam driven fuel pump on it but is not hooked up

I'd say that engine might not be original. The efi timing covers had no provision for a mechanical pump.
Many of aftermarket replacement timing covers have the mechanical fuel pump mount. I replaced the timing cover on my 89 5.0 Mustang with a Dorman product that came with a mechanical fuel pump mount

Alright where are the block numbers located? So if it's not the HO the firing order is different. and I just checked that when reinstalling it and i timed it off the HO firing order. I'm just assuming the engine is from a later model fox due to the mechanical fuel pump being on it.

Partial VIN on the top-rear of the block, on a flat pad behind the lower intake. That will tell you EXACTLY what the block is from. If it's original to your car it will be the last eight of your VIN (LF......).

1985 was the last year the mechanical pump was present. WHen the fox went EFI in 1986, that was done away with and the timing cover changed.

However, if you buy a timing cover, it's the mechanical pump version, requiring you to buy a block off plate for an EFI car

Thank you I'll try and find some time and run the block number!! Is there a power difference in the 85 carb 5.0 compared to the efi 5.0 besides for the advantage of EFi

About 15HP....but that's assuming the engine was a 5.0L high output, and not something out of a LTD or other anemic 5.0 car.

But the heads were different, although I believe E5 heads are very similar to E7 heads.

Let's not assume it's a 1985 block yet until you pull some numbers are verify.

The pickup motor and Mustang motor have the same firing order. It's the Windsor style firing order. If you have a mechanical pump, then the cover was swapped, or not the original engine. The Mustang went to EFI in I want to say 1987. In 1990 they didn't have the cam for a mechanical pump, and on the side the timing cover was cast in a way that the access was blocked.

H.O. 5.0L engine horsepower/torque ratings...

1982 = 157/240
1983 = 175/245
1984 = 165/245 (EFI), 175/245 (carb)
1985 = 165/245 (EFI, before 11/19/84) or 180/260 (EFI, after 11/18/84), 210/270 (carb)
1986 = 200/285
1987-1992 = 225/300
1993 = 205/275 (LX/GT), 235/280 (Cobra)
1994-1995 = 215/285 (GT/GTS), 240/285 (Cobra)
