On a '66 Toploader - I bought a Scott Drake shift rebuild kit, replacing the spring and plunger on the lower side of the shifter, along with the rubber isolator grommets for the mounting bolts. My question is - how much play should there be, if any - between the shifter and the lower trunnion (the U bracket the shifter bolts to)? Because the shifter bolts are carriage bolts, I figure there's some allowance to reduce vibration - but the 1/16th inch or so play makes me a bit concerned...

Thanks in advance for any insight or help...

Zero play. For some reason, SD has not seen fit to include the unique, very thick, hardened washers that go between the rubber grommets and the bolt heads. These washers are supposed to compress the grommets to proper clearance, and hold everything firmly. The only place I know to get these is Glazier/Nolan, and if you'd bought the kit from them, they'd have asked if you wanted them. Don't even think about getting these at a hardware store, they don't have what you need.
