Anyone else not liking short gears with their 5.0??

I have an AOD and will be swapping in a rebuilt housing axles etc...with 3:55's. If anyone needs some 3:27s let me know I have 2 sets . one from a 2000 gt and one from my 91 notch.....i'd let em go for cheap....pm me if interested.

how do i find out what a 90 LX with an AOD had for a rear end ratio.....?

Door tag or axle tag.

On the door you'll see a single letter under AX. I beleive M is 2.73 and Z is 3.27

On the rear itself there is a metal tag and you'll either see 2L73 or 3L27 on it

that would be perfect!! what about SN-95 cobras?

and how do I know it does in fact have the 3.08 rear end? I wouldn't want to swap the rears and get screwed lol..
SN-95 Cobras had 3.27 from 96-98 and the 03/04 had 3.55, IDK what the 99/01s had

i have 3.73's to. i cant launch it in first to save my life. or get traction in 2nd at all. unless i just leave off idle which is boring ha. dont help there are 205's on the back right now lol. im glad pay day is tomm get 4 new tires for it ha.

but yeah i hate the highway with my car. i want to step down to 3.55's honestly.

I hated the 4.10's in my 03 GT 5 speed. I hated my 4.10's in my supercharged 96 Cobra.

I love my 3.55's in my 04 Cobra. Wouldn't trade them for the world.

I kind of liked the 3.73's in my 91 notch, but I know what you mean 5L5. The car revs right through it's powerband. It felt like my 91 had no torque.

+1 i had 3.73's in my coupe and hated them. 3k cruise on the highway sucked! I have 2.73's and they don't bother me much (I do have a set of 3.55's that i MAY put in). My car isn't a track monster just a weekend tool around toy/long trip type thing.

I actually don't like my 3.73's cuz I don't think they are low enough. My car had 4.56's in it for so long it just seemed normal. Now with the 302 and the 3.73's it seems like it's lugging the motor on the highway at 65.

What are you driving now? I must have missed it.

If you have 3.73`s and want 3.55`s just put a 1" taller tire on it and see if you like it better.
Its easy to change tire size to get what you want.
As for me 3.73`s or 4.10`s and to hell with 80mph on the freeway.

If i was serious about drag racing the car i wouldn't mind the 3.73's....but the fact is the car is more of a cruiser. When it's a nice sunny afternoon, i take if for a spin after work. I prob get on it maybe once or twice in a 1 hour cruise, so i think a lower gear ratio is right up my alley.

I've been trying to give it a chance but more and more i'm leaning to not liking the 3.73's. Just too short between shifts. I plan on adding HP soon, so more reason to step down a bit.

QUestion is 3.55's or 3.27's.....i'm leaning 3.27's.

To answer your general question, its all in what you want the car for. My 89 is for going fast. H/C/I and 14psi. I've had 3.73s since day like 2000, and wouldn't dream of changing them. My one way drive to class is less than 4 miles, and I see full throttle(or as much as my slipping clutch will handle) several times. A little sideways action, or squealing tires is VERY common. The car almost never sees the interstate, just beating it around town. But like I said, thats what I want the car for, going fast.

My 93 cobra has 3.27s, and in my opinion, they are just a little to low for a stock 5.0. My old calypso 93 5.0 LX only has exhaust, and 3.55s, and it was perfect. First gear was still very usable in parking lots and such. The difference from 3.27s to 3.55s isn't enough to make me want to spend the coin. If I ever bought another 5.0 that was gonna remain nearly stock(less than 250rwhp) and it had 2.73 or 3.08s, I would pay to have 3.55s installed ASAP.

thanks man, forgot about that way of checking.....duh.....

just checked my door tag....mine has the M...so 2:73's i guess....now i'm pumped to get the 3:55's in there...it will be really noticable...:)

My first ever car was a 81 GT in 92. My second Stang is an 89 GT purchased in 03. It came with 4.10's and passenger car tires. Thats the way I had to learn to drive it.
I can do 25 mph in 4th gear and not lug it. Or start in 3rd. I like shifting. Its part of driving a manual. You can always get a taller tire to make your gears longer (or get a automatic :rlaugh:) so you dont have to shift so much.
I tell people that I have traction control in my 89. They usually say "Really?"
I have three pedals, a steering wheel, a shfter, and a brain. And I have to use them all at once. Go figure.

i don't care how much i use my brain, i still cant figure out how to make my gears longer and more comfortable when i am half awake and driving 30 miles to work in city traffic at 6 am. i dont even think my brain works that early. thats why i bought 3.55s last wednesday installing them soon.

Part of the problem is that gears are a choice kind of like cams, just less complicated. The engine, trans, and weight of the car do play a role, but what the purpose of the car is also very important.

Some might go to the track every blue moon, might get into a little red light action, and like to kick it every once in a while but the other 99% of the time they are either traveling or on the highway. Anything higher than 3.55 will probally be a bit much for them. Some of us might do some cruising and regular driving but the main purpose of the car is for getting on it, for us anything lower than 3.73 is not steep enough. Some of us are just trying to get track times, and then we should be just above peak HP as we cross the finish line.

My problem with 3.73's in my old car was that I was over RPM in 3rd gear as I crossed the 1/8th mark, going to 4th didn't help. I have that same 3.73 rear end in this car and now that I am learning how to do gears myself, I will switch out to 4.30+ with a 28" tall tire, when I get to that bridge. Right now my car is too heavy and the trans/engine is too stock.

So did it actually go faster leaving it in 3rd and over revving it out the back door than it did when you shifted 4th or did you simply bump it off the rev limiter before you made the line?

I know I have/had that issue with my car. I was bumping almost 7500 out the back door in 3rd on our 1/8 mile track, but the car actually made more MPH and ET'd better than it did when I shifted 4th. Not to mention it was one less shift to throw off the constancy in my ET's :nice:
