Hey guys, Siahnyde and I have been tearing down his motor to make it bigger, better, and more reliable. we want to clean out the inside of the motor, rotating assembly, and bearings without using a solvent tank or anything to that extent. What do you guys think about using a brake cleaner, carb cleaner, electrical cleaner, or something to that effect. Im looking for something that won't damage the coating on the D.s.s Pistons or the bearing surfaces.

Thank you,
Caleb

Dish soap and water, plus brushes and pipe cleaners. You could definitely use brake cleaner, to get the heavy contamination off, but for the final cleaning you'll probably want soap and water.

Im assuming your honing the cylinders as well, a pressure washer with simple green or a heavy degreaser will work, engine brushes come in handy then a good final wash as stated above using scalding hot water and dish soap (the dish soap helps carry the contaminants away) then dry it good, wiping down all machined surfaces with WD40 or oil. Make sure you run a tap through all the holes to clean them out prior to washing....

As far as the rotating assembly, mineral spirits or parts cleaner is best, which shouldn't damage the coating, brake clean may however hurt the coating on the pistons. Wiping the bearings and rods and crank with brake clean wont hurt a thing.

Great to know thanks a lot! We are going to be giving the cylinders a quick honing. They motor had been torn completely down and went through only three thousand miles ago so it's not too bad. just gonna clean it up before reassembly.
