Just bought an S-Trim--need help picking out supporting hardware.

I believe you may have read the info wrong on the Crane website there are 4 different level applications that they list. All but one recommend the HI-6s. The only one that does not is for for race or 14:1 and higher compression. The HI-6s but itself is ok to 6lbs of boost, after that they recommend their boost retard module if there is no other means of pulling timing out. The HI-6s puts out 70% more spark than the factory ign. more than enough for boost upto 14lbs.

Do a search on the power adder forums here and on Corral. A lot of people experience spark blow-out due to not enough output on the Hi-6S.

And to compare:

Crane Hi-6S Product Page

Crane Hi-6 Product Page
  • Digital
  • Capacitive Discharge
  • Spark Output: 1200 millijoules
  • "Multi-Spark CD, for race, street, 10 to 14.5:1 compression ratio, nitrousoxide, supercharged and turbo"

The point I want to get across is that for only $60 over the 6S, the 6 has more ouput and will allow more room to grow as more mods are made and as boost is increased.

Thanks for the continued help!

I was trying to decide which coil to get--I'd seen the LX-92 mentioned as the recommended coil in an Ebay auction for the HI-6. But then while comparing prices at Jegs.com, I noticed that they actually recommend the LX-91 for "non-race" applications.

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...atalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=17823

The LX-92 says:
Professional race coil for use with CD systems only. Gives up to 12 times greater output than OE. Replacement coil for Crane HI-7 system. Can also be used with Mallory Hyfire, MSD7 and MSD8 systems. Caution: MSD6 systems are not capable of driving the high current demanded by the LX92. Not compatible with Crane HI-6S system. CARB E.O. D-225-60 for 1995 and older non-OBD II vehicles with distributor-type CD ignition system.

The LX-91 says:
Recommended coil for street use with Crane HI-6, Mallory Hyfire, MSD-6 CD systems. Also works great with Crane HI-6S, HI-2000, HI-6500, and XR3000 inductive discharge ignitions. CARB E.O.#D-225-60 for 1995 and earlier non-OBD II applications.

So which one do you guys think I should get?

I spoke to Jegs about the coil issue, and they recommended the LX-91 as the LX-92 was described as being for primarily race applications. My car might see a few passes at the strip but will be almost completely a street car.

The parts I've purchased so far are:
Crane HI-6 Ignition System, $199

Ford Racing 42# injectors, $254.99

90MM Lightning MAF, $94.99

Crane LX-91 ignition coil, $49.99

I've heard that the stock 5.0 blocks tend to, um, expire once horsepower numbers get north of 500. Since the previous owner of the S-trim claimed 511rwhp on a DSS 306, I'm concerned that I might get dangerously close to blowing up my engine. While that would certainly be a good excuse to go with a beefier block and more cubes, I don't really want or need more than 500hp, so I'd rather keep my stock block intact if possible. As such, I was thinking about getting an ignition retard so I can pull timing if the horsepower numbers get too high (too high, is that REALLY possible??? ) while the car is being dyno tuned.

I found the Crane TRC-2 timing retard for $117.99 on Jegs.com. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...Id=10001&categoryId=29709&searchItemId=116867

So my next question--is it worth it to buy an ignition retard unit, or would I be fine just pulling a few degrees of ignition from the base timing?

Another couple of simpler questions:

I know I'm going to need an adapter to be able to use the Lightning MAF with my 5.0 wiring harness. Muscle Motors has it, but it's rather pricey at $50. ( http://www.musclemotors.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1088&HS=1 ) I'll suck it up and spend $50 for an adapter if I need to, but couple connectors and four short wires shouldn't be more than $20 or so, right?

Second, will I need any other adapters, such as something to install the HI-6 ignition system?

Right now, I'm pretty much trying to get all of the major parts I need lined up, and then I'm going to figure out all the small details while I'm working on the car. Of course, I'd rather not have to stop and order anything if I don't have to, which is why I'm asking here. :) Thanks!!
