90stang5speed Rear Mounted Turbo Project Thread

Like i said a page ago, put it under the hood.
You obviously know how to weld so altering shouldn't be that big of a deal.

You seem to be working pretty hard on the car.
I bet if you just used the conventional under the hood setup with an original efi intake, you would already be done.

Not to mention with the intercooler in the grill and without the ticking time bomb behind your seat, if you chose to drive it on the street, you could.

If you didn't know how to weld, i too would say it's too late, but since you do it's not too late yet.

Not sure if this turbo in the car idea came in a dream, drunken stuper, or while tripping on acid, regardless it's not a good idea, it's actually counter productive.
I'm having trouble believing that the same guy that built the good looking engine on page 1 is also responsible for this turbo setup.

The plan was to build something a little different. Once I decided to build a turbo small block instead of a fuel injected big block, the next plan was to go about it in a different way. The actual idea wasn’t all that original. I saw in a magazine where a guy had a notch back with the turbo mounted in the trunk. I don’t remember how the exhaust was routed but, the inlet of the turbo could be seen through a big round hole in the quarter panel. Well, I don’t have a trunk & I thought that mounting the turbo in front of the rear axle would make plumbing the exhaust easier for me. As best I can remember, that guy was only separated from the turbo by sheet metal where the back seat would be & he had some ¼ mile times so I guess he had to be legal to run. Another small reason for the turbo placement was for weight distribution. Kind of like how a lot of people relocate the battery to the back, I figured that anything I could take from the front & add to the rear might be a benefit. I had a 60/40 split before the turbo & cage install. I will post what it is once everything is finished. The overall goal for this car is to be a mid 10 to mid 9 second car. Only time will tell if I will make those goals. I know there are plenty of 10 second front mounted turbo cars out there. Thanks for all the safety concerns & suggestions. I too hope that my first ride won’t be my last. Like it or hate it, there is only one way to see how this will all turn out & that is to try it. On the other STS Turbo cars that are externally rear mounted, I wonder if any of their turbos have ever grenaded & what damage they caused? I guess that now might be a bad time to mention that Wyle E. Coyote is one of my favorite cartoon characters. A Super Genius, I am not though. Yes, the dash is made from diamond plate. It isnt finished yet either. So, not only do I have a grenade at my back, I have the potential to be blinded by sun glaring from the front. Hey, anybody wanna go for a ride? LOL

Thanks guys! I needed that. I've kind of been put on stand by until I can get more funds approved by the wife to buy supplies with. Here is a little something I have been working on for my back window. The tribal pattern is the tattoo on my back. It has a wolf face where the mustang is in the pic. The rear window will be tinted so the tribal you see in black now will actually be white on the car.

You should've just mounted it on the roof.

why dont you just put the turbo where the mufflers were? That scoop is a bad idea, i was being sarcastic before. Also, that tribal graphic is awful, worse than any sticker ive ever seen on a mustang. Dont do it.

When I posted this thread I knew I was heading in a very unpopular direction. Everyone has their opinions on things & I can respect that. Whether or not this build will be a failure from a cosmetic or a performance stand point remains to be seen. Im not building this car to win car shows for being pretty. I’m not building this car to be in any class for competition. It’s just a project to have fun with, to show up on test an tune nights, run the best I can run & drive home. Im actually surprised that anyone complimented my build or requested to know what parts I was using so they could use them too. The constructive criticisms for safety have feed the inspiration to make the build better. For those that just don’t like it, that’s OK too.

The Point Of No Return

I got a little work done. The point of no return has definitely been crossed. I have the Scatter shield / heat extractor box built. I used 5/8” angle iron to build a frame to attach the plates to. The top of the box is removable to access the turbo or the whole box can be removed if needed leaving only the lower frame attached to the car. I still need to make templates & cut sheet metal to enclose the area under the box. I’ve got the driver’s side scoop fabbed up & the 4” pipe to connect the ducting is welded to the scoop. The hole has been cut for the side scoop & I found a layer of bondo already on the quarter panel that’s about 1/8” thick. With the way the wheel well looks, that shouldn’t have been a huge surprise. I also mocked up the fan shroud for the top plate of the box. I don’t have the fan yet but, I decided to go with an 8” trans cooler fan over the 4” bilge blower. The bilge blower pushes 240CFM where the 8” fan pushes 800 CFM. Because I’m trying to push heat down, I thought more CFM would be better. Nothing in the pics has been hard mounted to the car yet. It’s going to be a while before I can do much more to it so I just sprayed some primer on to try to keep the rust down.

Still no sound clip yet but, I might have to work on that this weekend. I’m all out of wire for the MIG and I haven’t ordered the fan yet. I still need to talk my financial advisor (AKA the wife) into the funds to buy supplies.

Dont let these tards get you down man. you are doing something different and probably something they cant so they are mad. It might not be the best or most conventional way of doing it but dont let that stop you from being innovative and creative. keep up the good work.

Thanks BK_CAULEY. That stuff doesn't bother me much. The constructive criticism has been useful though. Once the car is back on the road/track is the only way anyone will know if it was a failed attempt. I have a feeling that it will silence a lot of the haters once I post up some track time slips.
