Mix and match combo questions

Hey guys quick question here

so now that im done with the outside looks of the car im going to focus on the power.

I have a hook up on a edelbrock rpm intake and gt40 heads, and ill prob buy the 2031 cam or something similair, so im thinking around 800 for the H/C/I , and ill prob get a vortech supercharger kit used as well.

My goal for the car is to be a solid street car. Meaning I want to be able to take it to the track and rip low 12's maybe an 11, handle an autox, and be fun to drive on the street.

so with that in mind I was hoping this combo can make around 450-500 hp with similair TQ. How feasible is that, Ill prob run 10-12 psi on the blower to achieve that...or should i not run that much boost?

my last 95, i rebuilt the engine put 11:1 pistons, ran stock gt40 heads, gasket matched gt40 intake, e cam, all the bolt ons and a 100 shot and the car made 450 hp 505 TQ.

i guess i am trying to figure out how well my selection of parts will work with the supercharger

i know going with an afr or tfs head is going to be better...I just dont have the funds, besides a member here made over 500 hp with stock gt40 heads, and a ported intake, so i know its possible.

like i said im on a budget, and i really dont want an all out car
 
Throw enough boost at a sbf and your choice in speed parts is not gonna
make all that much difference from what I've seen with past boost threads.

I've seen quite a few low budget blown combos with nothing but
OEM heads/intake, shortys and the like pump out well over 400

Keep in mind they did not move air all that well with the budget parts so
they were usually at 12 pounds at least and more at times :eek:

Sure ... aftermarket parts with boost is gonna make more power :nice:
but
I'm just saying they aren't a must for what you got in mind :shrug:

If all you wanna do is a 12.00 et ... give or take a bit .........
you don't need 400 or better to obtain that goal :nono:

You dont need alum. heads to hit 400+rwhp. Local guy had E7's, stock cam, cobra intake, a lot of bolt ons, tuned, and 12-15lbs of boost and was at like 425rwhp.

You are looking at needing more than 10lbs of boost probably.

Susp. is going to be what really makes or breaks you. Add that your wanting to autocross it...your going to have to make a comp. An evil autocross setup will suck on the 1320 while a great 1320 setup will suck on an autocross. Aim in the middle and it wont be a standout but should still be fun.

I remember reading and hearing that a fox with 50 hp over stock...has the power to run 12's...if it has the right susp. setup. Same thing with our cars basicly...with the need for a little more hp. Killer is proof of that, what 300rwhp or so and 12.0's or something and VERY possibly high 11 capable (old setup) and his is a vert.
 
thanks for the input guys! now I'm wondering about the psi, what would generally be considered too much boost? would something around 12 psi be too much?

like i mentioned yeah i know i cant have the best in each department but i want it to be a solid all around performer car so i know ill need comprimise.
 
Boost is one of those things that is misunderstood by many :(

Lets use 2 very different combo examples :eek:
to shed more light on the subject :D

1) A little stocker GT Stang with all OEM parts in place
2) A GT Stang with TFS h/c/i, LT's/OR mid pipe, larger tb & maf

We put a Vortech on each combo with the same pulley setup .......
and what do you think we will find :scratch:

Less boost on the h/c/i than on the little stocker :eek: :crazy:

Why you might ask :shrug:

#2 Combo flows more air ... way more air ... than #1
thus
#1 Offers more restriction to the blower so it's boost reading is
gonna be a higher value

Now ... Lets ask some questions here :D

Does that mean the combo with the most boost is gonna produce
the most power ??? :)

Here is where one has to aks themself .......

Would I rather have the combo with the better flowing parts
at less boost :scratch:

OR

Would it be better to have the stocker with 2 to 4 pounds more boost
but
With the tiny, restrictive, OEM parts holding back the blower :scratch:

OF COURSE ... One could always be tempted to pulley down #2 ;)

Then that greedy fellow ... Well ...........

Maybe he would like that mod where one ends up with ......

Two 2.5 liter sbf motors instead of the one 5.0 liter sbf motor :rlaugh:

Boost is all about restriction ... or ... lack of it ... to the air flow
generated by the blower ;)
